2. Self-Talk

This method is similar to parallel talk, only you are narrating what you as the parent are doing, rather than observing your child. As you play with your child, talk about what you are doing. 3. Expansions and Extensions

4. Non-Verbal Communication

Early Intervention Key for Speech and Hearing Disorder Prognoses

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month and communication experts stress that early intervention is critical to increasing the likelihood of a positive prognosis for those with communication disorders. Yet a 2018 poll of audiologists and speech-language pathologists conducted by American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) found that “parents are generally not aware of the early warning signs of communication disorders—nor do they recognize the benefits of early treatment.”

That is unfortunate, since many communication disorders are extremely amenable to treatment.

“Delaying treatment means children may miss a critical developmental window where they acquire a majority of their foundational speech and language skills, which occurs between birth and 3 years of age,” says ASHA President Elise Davis-McFarland. “The skills achieved during this time lay the groundwork for later success with reading and writing, academics, social interactions, and career options and advancement—making early intervention for any speech/language or hearing problem, preferably well before age 3, so important.”
