At Enabling Devices, we like to shine a light on businesses that hire and train people with disabilities. Meaningful employment is an important step toward independence, confidence, and inclusion. So, when we learned about the A Cheerful Giver candle company, we were eager to share their story with our readers and customers.
The New Jersey–based company has been hiring people with disabilities for the past 20 years. Employees at A Cheerful Giver play an important role in the production process, placing wicks in the scented candles the company sells nationwide. According to Susan Gross, who owns the business with her husband Tony Gross, adults with special needs are “the heart of our operation.” The Grosses developed their company’s inclusive business model through a partnership with CODI (Career Opportunity Development, Inc.), a nonprofit organization founded by parents of disabled adult children in 1970.
CODI provides case management and employment services for people with disabilities, helping connect them with local businesses that are willing to create supportive work opportunities. In addition to its partnership with A Cheerful Giver, CODI works with a number of other companies and organizations in the region to help individuals gain valuable job experience and earn a paycheck.
One of the things that makes A Cheerful Giver stand out is the flexibility it offers its employees. Workers are free to choose how much they want to work on any given day. Some may stay all day, while others might participate for a shorter period depending on their energy level or schedule. In an interview with Good News Network, Susan Gross explained the philosophy behind this approach: “There’s no pressure, no quotas, just purposeful employment and the pride that comes with being part of something real.” Regardless of whether someone works for a few minutes or a full shift, employees are paid for the time they contribute.
The company’s candles have been favorably compared to popular brands such as Yankee Candle, known for their rich scents and long burn time. But for many customers, the appeal goes beyond the quality of the product. Purchasing a candle from A Cheerful Giver also helps support employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
As Tony Gross explains, “At Cheerful Giver, we are more than just another candle company. We are a proud American company that makes our own products and gives back to ensure we are making a difference in the lives of others.” Through their partnership with CODI and their commitment to inclusive hiring, the Grosses have created a business that not only produces beautiful candles but also spreads opportunity and dignity to members of their community.
