What Is a Mounting System?
Mounting systems are the hardware setups that attach to wheelchairs, tables and other surfaces to hold small items. These mounting systems include:
- Mount: The clamp or base attaches to the seat rail, armrest, desktop or other surface.
- Mounting arm: The arm extends from the mount base to allow the user to position the item. Some mounting arms are articulated for more flexibility in changing positions.
- Plate or tray: The plate or tray is specifically designed to securely hold an item.
With a mounting system, people with functional needs (commonly referred to as special needs) or mobility issues that impact movement and grip can hold, transport and use the following:
- Communication devices
- iPad or another tablet
- Capability switch
- Drink cup
- Cellphone
- Laptop
- Computer keyboard
- Computer mouse
- TV remote
Benefits of Mounting Systems
Mounting systems offer many benefits for those with disabilities, allowing them to:
- Communicate with others: Mounting systems allow individuals with functional needs to keep their capability switches and communication devices nearby, so they can use them whenever they need to. These systems allow users to develop simple communication and encourage socialization with their peers.
- Gain independence: Mounting systems provide independence because they enable users to hold and transport small objects on their own. Being able to do small tasks without assistance can make them feel more empowered and confident.
- Activate capability switches: Mounting systems make it easier for people with functional needs to activate devices, such as a capability switch, which are essential for communicating, using technology and more.
Types of Mounting Systems
Enabling Devices has many mounting system styles and accessories to adapt to many different users. Our mounting systems for wheelchairs and tables include:
- Mounting arms: The mounting arms are articulated, extendable arms with a heavy-duty clamp to attach to bedrails, tables and wheelchairs. With a mounting arm, you can hold small objects weighing a few pounds.
- Attachments: The attachments for mounting systems are designed to hold capability switches and position them on the wheelchair.
- Clamps: Our clamp accessories clamp to the edge of a workstation or arm of a wheelchair to hold switches, drink cups and more.
- Mounting plates: The mounting plates and trays position switches and small items at eye level, within arm’s reach or wherever the user needs them.
- Mounts and mounting systems: We have mounting systems and trays for wheelchairs, desktops and bedrails that allow people with disabilities to position their switch anywhere they’d like it. With tray adapters, you can install the mounting system on tubular rails, gooseneck tubes or arm mounts.
