What Are Compartment Communicators?

Compartmentalized communicators are language learning tools. The compartments are spaces for icons, photos, frames and objects. Each compartment is also connected to a switch that lights it up and plays a recorded message. They’re suitable for building skills like object classifications, synonyms and antonyms, sequencing and comparisons. This learning device helps kids identify objects and learn their names quickly.

How Do Compartment Communicators Work?

To use a compartment communicator, you place an object, and word or picture icon in each compartment. You use the velcro or holding strip to hold pictures or icons. Then, you press the switch plate to play the message and turn on one light at a time. To play the message on another compartment, simply press the switch for it.

The device has a total recording time of 20 seconds, and the length of each recording depends on the number of compartments in the model you have. The four-message compartment model allows a five-second recording for each switch, while the three-message compartment model allows a little more than six seconds of recording for each switch.

For more intensive training, you can choose the tabletop compartment communicator with 12 levels. This model has dual scan modes, colorful plates along with spaces for photos, icons and objects. Each compartment also has a switch to light it up and play the recorded messages. On each of the 12 levels, there are four messages that play for five seconds. The scan speed is adjustable, and you can switch between auto and inverse scanning. This model is ideal for teachers who instruct children with special needs.

How Compartment Communicators Help Those With Disabilities

These devices are classified as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, and they’re designed for adults or children who have severe speech and language impairment. These individuals benefit from symbols and pictures to understand the messages communicated to them. The devices are also useful for people who have visual impairments and need tactile symbols that can be felt with the hand. They offer many other benefits as well, including that:

  • Picture symbols can be tailored to suit the unique abilities of the child.
  • Actual photos or objects that the child uses can be incorporated.
  • The device will allow you to use objects that have the texture of the actual objects.
  • After symbols have been designed, they may be re-used in different ways to convey a variety of messages.
  • When symbols are arranged in compartments of the communication device, your child will be able to associate the speech in the recording with the symbol as soon as the switch is activated.
  • The device allows the same symbols to be used in a consistent sequence so that the child does not get confused.
